In comments reported by Football London, Jose Mourinho has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur could have a problem should either Son Heung-min or Lucas Moura run out of steam.
Spurs have kept the pressure on the top four with a dramatic 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Sunday. After initially going behind, Son put Mourinho’s men in front on two occasions, including in stoppage-time at the end of the second-half.
Meanwhile, Lucas produced another tireless performance in the victory. The Brazilian perhaps did not make a notable impact going forward, but there was plenty of energy.
And Mourinho conceded after the win that Spurs are keeping everything crossed that the pair remain fit for the rest of the campaign.
“The problem with Son and Lucas, the problem with especially these two guys is they have to play 90 minutes every game,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“That’s the problem and if they run out of fuel then we are in trouble but their quality as players is fantastic, their attitude towards the team is absolutely incredible and I am so, so pleased for them.”
Son, in particular, has stepped up enormously since Harry Kane sustained his injury on New Year’s Day.
The forward has scored six goals in his last five appearances for Spurs in all competitions. He is now just two goals behind Kane’s league tally for the campaign having only made one substitute appearance more.
Tottenham are now unbeaten in their last seven, and have won five of those games. It is a fantastic run considering that they have not had their talisman available.
And they now find themselves one point off the top four having taken nine points from their last three games.
