Jose Mourinho a big fan of ‘naughty but funny’ reported Tottenham target Jesse Lingard

Tottenham Hotspur are being linked with a move for Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard. According to the Daily Star, Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing the player to North London, with Lingard said to be furious at his recent treatment at Old Trafford.

Of course, Mourinho will know Lingard well from his time managing the Red Devils and according to his comments about the England international in the past, Lingard is a player Mourinho enjoys having in the changing room.

“He is a naughty but funny guy,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail in 2018. “He is the funny one that doesn’t disturb the class. He is the funny one that the teacher isn’t upset with.

“He is the one that makes things work and in the right moment he is positive and he makes everyone in the class laugh and creates a good atmosphere and that is the atmosphere that we always want in our class, because I was also a school teacher and I know what it means.

“We like the funny person that doesn’t disturb and makes everyone happier. We don’t like the naughty ones who disturb everyone as they learn.”

There’s no doubt that Lingard has an infectious personality, even if, at times, it has perhaps seen him painted with a brush of immaturity or unprofessionalism.

Mourinho clearly does not feel that way and believes that Lingard brings some very desirable characteristics to the dressing room.

Lingard is clearly not the most popular choice among Tottenham fans for a potential recruit. However, the England international thrived under the Portuguese boss.

Lingard played 43 times under Mourinho in the 2016-17 season, winning the Europa League before scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists in the 2017-18 campaign under the current Tottenham boss. He then carried that form into an impressive World Cup with England.

So clearly, Mourinho can get the best out the player and, for less than the apparent £30 million price-tag currently being mentioned, Lingard might be a solid recruit for Tottenham.
