Renato Sanches certainly caught the eye on Wednesday. As Portugal edged into the last 16 thanks to a 2-2 draw with Group F winners France, Sanches impressed. Lille ace Sanches was handed his first Euro 2020 start and Jose Enrique thinks he is ideal to replace Gini Wijnaldum at Liverpool.

Sanches, 23, has rejuvenated his career during a couple of seasons with Lille. Following a spell at Bayern which saw his enormous potential dissipate into unfulfilled talent, Sanches even struggled on loan at Swansea. A move to Lille has saved his early hiccup, even winning Ligue 1.

That form has seen him remain a Portugal international, with 29 caps already to his name. He started and lasted 88 minutes as Portugal drew 2-2 with France. As Wijnaldum prepares to join PSG on a free, Enrique believes Sanches would be the ideal midfielder to come in and replace him.

Enrique said: “He has always been a great player. If I’m not wrong, he was named the best player in an Under-21 tournament. Like many young players, he had everything too quick. It took him a few years to settle. He looks the type of player, Klopp can help him become a world-class player.”

Liverpool transfer news: Enrique is right, Sanches ideal for Liverpool

Sanches is the perfect balance of defensive, and attacking midfield. Wijnaldum became a star and a fan favourite at Liverpool for his work rate in Jurgen Klopp’s engine room. He also popped up with some important goals. Sanches is capable of that, and at 23, he is a no brainer.

Playing 59 times for Lille, Sanches has still had a hand in 10 goals – while offering a shield for the defence, cover for full-backs and getting forward. He really can do it all. No surprises then, that Liverpool have already been linked. In February, it was claimed Sanches was ‘destined’ for Liverpool.

TransferMarkt state he is represented by Jorge Mendes’ agency, Gestifute – the same as Fabinho and Diogo Jota.
