Jose Enrique has urged Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to start Fabinho at centre-back when he returns to fitness.

Fabinho, who earns £100,000-a-week, is a Brazilian defensive midfielder that has been such a key figure at Anfield in the past couple of years.

The 27-year-old has been so vital for the squad this season filling in effortlessly at centre-back due to the amount of injuries in the heart of defence.

He’s missed the last four games in all competitions through injury, but fans will be waiting to hear an update on his fitness in Klopp’s press conference on Wednesday.

Pundit and ex-Liverpool defender Enrique is convinced that Fabinho needs to come straight back into the XI at centre-half when available.

“There’s been a lot of talk about what to do with Fabinho when he returns. 100%, I’d play him at centre-back,” Enrique wrote for Empire Of The Kop.

“Centre-back is one of the main positions on the field. The beginning of the spine. We need a leader there like Fabinho.”

Conventional centre-backs Ozan Kabak and Nat Phillips started together in the weekend’s Premier League win over Sheffield United, but that would be an extremely inexperienced duo to play on Thursday against Chelsea.

If Fabinho is passed fit, his return to the side would be colossal.

There is a huge argument to be made that the Reds have missed the Brazilian in their midfield this campaign, but he’s still effective when he plays in defence and looks a natural when doing so.

Klopp is desperately trying to find the right balance in defence, amid the injury crisis.
