Jose Enrique says Thiago would start for Liverpool – but explains why he is ‘not the best fit’

Jose Enrique has told Stadium Astro that while he is confident Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara would start for Liverpool, he has questioned whether the Brazilian would be a good fit at Anfield – amid reports the Reds are interested.

Italian-born Thiago, 29, has entered the final 12 months of his contract with German champions Bayern – after helping his side win their seventh consecutive Bundesliga title, joining the club in 2013. But he is now set to leave this summer.

Spanish newspaper Sport claimed last week that negotiations between player and club had been agreed, and that Liverpool and Bayern had to agree a fee for the ex-Barcelona star. It is believed Bayern want £31.5million for his signature.

Former Liverpool defender Enrique believes Thiago would start in Liverpool’s midfield, ousting one of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho or Gini Wijnaldum. But he stated that Thiago may not be the best fit, because he is already 29.

“He’s 29 already,” Enrique said. “I believe he would be a very, very good player for us. But how much do you want to spend on a player like this, and how many years is he going to perform? That’s what you have to look at.

“So for that reason, I am not sure that Thiago would be the best fit [for Liverpool]. But he is an unbelievable player, I have no doubt about that. Would he get into the starting line-up? For me, he would be in the starting line-up.”

TBR’s view – Thiago at just £31.5m is an absolute no brainer

Forget his age, at a fee that cheap, Liverpool would be signing one of Europe’s most composed, technically gifted, ball-playing midfielders. The Reds would have a modern-day Xabi Alonso on their hands in the form of Thiago.

Passing, shooting, low centre of gravity, creativity, aggression. You name it, Thiago has it all. At such a bargain figure, even if Thiago only performs for the next two or three years, he is worth it.
