Wolves officially confirmed the signing of Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon this week, and Jose Enrique is sad that Liverpool didn’t sign the talented midfielder.

Nunes has been heavily linked with a move to a number of clubs in the Premier League over the last few months. Liverpool were named as one of the interested parties, and a move even looked likely at one point.

However, Jurgen Klopp decided to stick with the players he has at his disposal, and that opened opportunities for other clubs to make a move for the 23-year-old.

With a bit of help from Jorge Mendes, Wolves sealed the deal this week for £42.2 million (Sky Sports).

Nunes was one of the best midfielders in the Portuguese top-flight last season.

The Rio de Janeiro-born Portugual international played 50 times for Sporting in all competitions and he impressed everyone. Pep Guardiola even branded him as ‘one of the best players in the world‘ back in February this year.

Liverpool fans were excited when rumours linked their club with a move for Nunes. Enrique, in particular, has raved about him on plenty of occasions, and he’s now sad that the midfielder has joined a different Premier League club.

Reacting to Wolves’ announcement, a dejected Enrique wrote in his Instagram Stories: “I wish it was us but congratulations to Wolverhampton.”

Liverpool need a midfielder

Even if Liverpool don’t sign a single player between now and the end of the window, they will still have one of the best teams in the Premier League.

However, almost every Reds fan will agree that they could do with a world-class midfielder.

Liverpool’s winless start to the new season has attracted a ton of criticism. Many feel they just won’t be able to compete with Manchester City if they don’t strengthen their midfield, which is arguably a fair assessment.

Whether Klopp will be able to bring in a new midfielder before the window shuts is anyone’s guess at the moment, but the one thing that’s certain is that it won’t be Nunes.
