Jose Enrique has opened the door to a possible return to Liverpool when asked by a fan on Instagram if he would return as a coach in the near future – after wishing former Liverpool and Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez a happy birthday.

Enrique, 34, clocked up 99 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions after joining the club from Newcastle United in 2011. The former Spain Under-21 international eventually retired from professional football in 2017, after a stint with Zaragoza.

Despite playing 30 more times for Newcastle after coming through the ranks Levante and playing for Villarreal, Enrique has remained a Liverpool fan since retiring – with his Instagram feed completely Liverpool related.

Though he never played under Benitez for Newcastle or Liverpool, Enrique wished the Spanish boss – who is currently in charge of Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang – a happy birthday on Instagram, as Benitez turned 60.

Jurgen Klopp’s coaching staff have certainly helped the German take Liverpool to the next level. The likes of Pep Ljinders, John Achterberg, Andreas Kornmayer, Philipp Jacobsen, Mona Nemmer, Andy Massey and Lee Nobes have all played their part.

But Enrique was asked on his post to Benitez whether he would consider a return to Anfield – four years after leaving the club – to become a coach. The Spaniard opened the door to such a move.
