Jose Enrique react to Fabrizio Romano’s update on Liverpool interest in two players
Well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has posted a transfer update about Liverpool’s business for the upcoming summer transfer window, which has received a confused response from ex-Reds defender Jose Enrique.
Romano has claimed on Twitter that Liverpool are set to complete a deal to sign RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate.
It is understood that the 22-year-old centre-back has already agreed personal terms with the Reds, and that he’ll move to Anfield on a contract that expires in 2026.
Additionally, Romano reported that Jurgen Klopp’s side are yet to come up with a final answer when it comes to on-loan defender Ozan Kabak, but it’s “unlikely” he will return to Merseyside.
21-year-old centre-back Kabak has been on loan with Liverpool since he joined in February from Schalke, but he’s returning to his parent German club.
Enrique isn’t convinced though that Liverpool should be targeting centre-backs amid interest.
“For me we should not buy either of them and keep Phillips as a fourth option. If we are going to sell (Joel) Matip then [it] is fair but if not I don’t understand. We need [to strengthen] other positions,” Enrique posted on Instagram.
If all of Liverpool’s centre-backs are fit, they’ve got more than enough quality within their ranks.
However, their injury record was atrocious this season, and thankfully for them some inexperienced players stepped up to help secure Champions League qualification on the final day of the league campaign.
Konate is an emerging centre-half with a growing reputation.
The French centre-back appears to be on his way to the Premier League, and Liverpool will be bringing in a talent with so much potential.
Meanwhile, the Kabak interest seems pointless if they add Konate to their existing options in defence.
