Jose Enrique praises Liverpool for signing ‘phenomenal’ Thiago Alcantara

Former Liverpool defender, Jose Enrique, has backed the signing of Thiago from Bayern Munich, insisting the Spaniard can take the Reds to another level.

Despite romping to Premier League glory last season, Liverpool have moved in the market this summer to sign both Thiago and Diogo Jota, while they’ve also added Kostas Tsimikas to the ranks.

All three will add depth to the squad at Anfield but it is the signing of Thiago that Enrique believes will prove an inspired move.

The former Reds and Newcastle full-back told the Daily Mail:

“He’s a phenomenal player. He’s a top midfielder but he’s also a magician in the way that Coutinho was. I can see him alongside Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in midfield, giving the team something they didn’t have before. It says a lot about where the club is right now that someone who is an important player at Bayern Munich wants to come and play for Liverpool.”

Thiago made his Liverpool debut against Chelsea but has since been in isolation away from the squad thanks to Covid-19.

However, he is expected to return to the fold for this weekend’s clash with Merseyside rivals, Everton. And given the Reds were hammered 7-2 by Aston Villa last time out, Jurgen Klopp could well chuck the Spaniard into the starting XI.

Enrique touches on it in his comments but Thiago really is one of the world’s best midfielders and the fact that Liverpool have snatched him from Bayern is an astute piece of business.

Hopefully he can start to kick on and show the Premier League what he is all about. Weirdly, Liverpool need him as well.

Their performance at Villa was woeful and they now need someone to step up to the plate and deliver the goods.
