Lionel Messi’s future has been up for debate this season with the Barcelona player allowed to leave the club on a free this summer – and Jose Enrique has jokingly posted a picture of the Argentine in a Liverpool shirt, asking fans what they think.

Messi, 32, has a contract at Barcelona until the summer of 2021 but is widely known that the South American star has inserted a clause that allows him to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of any season. This time around, there is a hint he could.

The Barca captain is reportedly at loggerheads with director of football Eric Abidal. The Mail claims Messi is not impressed with abidal suggetsing the players got Ernesto Valverde the sack. Despite that, Messi still has 24 goals in 31 games.

Messi, who earns a whopping £49million a year – or £940,000 a week as per the Mail, could depart Barcelona and Liverpool might be one of the very few clubs in with a chance of landing the attacker. Enrique posted an edited picture of Messi.

TBR’s view – Could anyone, let alone Liverpool, really sign Messi?

Considered as the best footballer to ever grace the earth, Messi has only ever played for Barcelona. The 32-year-old’s stats are sensational – scoring 627 goals in 718 Barcelona appearances, and laying on a whopping 261 assists.

Four Champions League titles, six Ballon d’Ors, 10 La Liga titles and plenty more honours also sit in Messi’s trophy cabinet. So, could Messi really leave Barcelona after all these years? He has spoken about playing in his home country before.

But to move to any club is unlikely, especially given the current financial restraints due to the pandemic. The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and PSG could afford him – but for Liverpool to sign Messi, seems unlikely.
