Jose Enrique and Wilf Zaha react as Everton finally announce signing
Andros Townsend has finally completed his long-awaited move to Everton on a free transfer from Crystal Palace. The England international has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Goodison Park, after his Palace deal expired. Wilfried Zaha and Jose Enrique have responded to Townsend joining Everton.
Townsend, who turned 30 this week, reunites with Rafa Benitez and becomes the Spaniard’s first addition as Toffees gaffer. Everton were in desperate need of signings on the flanks and Townsend has been brought in to offer that. Bayer Leverkusen’s Demarai Gray is also likely to join.
The ex-Tottenham and Newcastle wide man has posted a message to Everton fans on Instagram following his move to Goodison Park. He touches on just how big a club he is joining, and his delight at swapping Palace for Everton. Townsend has agreed a deal until the summer of 2023.
Zaha, Enrique, Benteke and others react to Townsend joining Everton
It is a surprising move. Townsend is now into his thirties and while he still offers Premier League quality and plenty of experience in England’s top flight, is he the kind of signing to excite Everton fans? It has certainly been questioned by Toffees supporters. But he comes to add depth.
Indeed, the chances of him being a starter week in, week out is unlikely – as he was at Palace. But he will certainly get plenty of game time, especially if Benitez deploys a rotation policy that he is renowned for. Zaha, Enrique and Christian Benteke are among the many to react to Townsend’s move.
Enrique joked that Townsend has got to finish below Liverpool.
