It was a night of club records for Liverpool despite failing to beat FC Midtjylland in Denmark on Wednesday evening – and Trent Alexander-Arnold has posted on Instagram following his first ever match with the captain’s armband.
Alexander-Arnold, 22, was handed the armband as Jurgen Klopp fielded a much-changed side from the one that beat Wolves 4-0 at the weekend. It was the England defender’s first start since overcoming a calf problem.
Now just three appearances shy of reaching 150 in all competitions for the Reds, Alexander-Arnold kept the armband until the 61st minute when Jordan Henderson entered the fray. Liverpool, meanwhile, played out a 1-1 draw.
Mo Salah scored the club’s fastest Champions League goal. Billy Koumetio became the club’s youngest player, while Salah replaced Steven Gerrard as the club’s top scorer in the tournament. Alexander-Arnold posted on Instagram.
Touted as a future captain of the club given he is Liverpool born and bred, the image of Alexander-Arnold with the captain’s armband is likely to be the first of many. He should retain his place ahead of Sunday’s game at Fulham.
The club’s current captain, Henderson, reacted on Instagram to his post and congratulated Alexander-Arnold – describing his achievement to captain Liverpool at just 22 as “unbelievable”. Gerrard also posted two emojis.
