Jonny Howson has claimed that Leeds United are the best team in the Championship after their win against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.
Howson, 31, played the 90 minutes at right-back for Boro in the midweek league fixture and he ended up losing to his former side Leeds 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium.
Mateusz Klich scored the winner on the stroke of half-time for the visitors, as he tucked in his low finish to the bottom corner.
The result means that the Whites stay second in the Championship table occupying an automatic promotion spot and are four points behind leaders West Brom, but more importantly for them five ahead of third-placed Fulham.
Meanwhile, Boro are only above the relegation places on goal difference and have been dragged right into a relegation scrap due to a run of no league wins since 1 January.
“In my opinion they are the best team in the league, and we gave it a good go,” Howson said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“Sometimes in these tight games the first goal can decide it, and the timing of it today can take the wind out of you.”
Howson is a favourite at Elland Road that came through the Leeds academy as a midfielder and played 219 senior appearances for the Yorkshire club.
He’s now an important player at Boro that has played a number of positions and he gave a decent account of himself in midweek with a committed display.
Leeds will be focused on a third straight win to reignite their promotion bid and the improvement in defence has made life so much easier for them.
They travel to Hull City at the weekend before hosting Huddersfield Town a week later, which are two fixtures that Bielsa’s men should be eyeing maximum points.
