Jonathan Woodgate explains one scenario in which Harry Kane must leave Tottenham

Jonathan Woodgate has told Stadium Astro that Tottenham Hotspur attacker Harry Kane “has got to go” if Real Madrid become interested in the coming months, given that he feels Spurs will not win the league over the course of the next few season.

Kane, 27, took his tally to 17 goals in 24 games on Saturday as Tottenham beat Leeds 3-0 – while also laying on his 14th assist of the season for Son Heung-min to net his 100th goal since joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen.

Real Madrid have been constantly linked with Kane as they look to lure the England skipper to the Santiago Bernabeu as a long-term replacement for Karim Benzema. But there are suggestions that Kane wants to stay at Spurs for his entire career.

Ex-Tottenham and Real Madrid defender Woodgate was asked if Kane should consider a move to Real, and states that if Zinedine Zidane’s side come in for his signature – then he has got to sign on the dotted line.

“If Real Madrid come in for you, especially Harry Kane, he’s got to go. If he wants to win trophies and get on to that next pedestal of Ronaldo or Messi, he has to go. I don’t see him winning the league at Spurs over the next few years.

“They’ve got too much to do to get alongside Liverpool. If he wants to win a European Cup, then he has got a chance of doing it at Real Madrid,” Woodgate continued, when talking to Stadium Astro following the 3-0 win over Leeds.

TBR’s view – What do Tottenham need to do to keep Kane?

His interview with Jamie Redknapp during lockdown made it abundantly clear. Kane spoke openly about his future, stating he wants to see Spurs going in the right direction – after spectacularly falling off the edge of the cliff under Mauricio Pochettino.

Mourinho has taken Spurs into the top four after 16 league games, into the Carabao Cup semi-finals where they face Brentford and easing into the Europa League knockout rounds. Trophies will keep Kane, and so will Champions League qualification.

If Spurs fail to win a trophy this season, then Kane might have to consider a move.
