‘Joined the race’: Fabrizio Romano now says Newcastle among elite European clubs keen on teenage sensation

Newcastle United return to action in the Premier League today, as they visit Leicester City.

It’s an opportunity for Eddie Howe’s side to prove their form before the World Cup was a sign of things to come.

The January transfer window is also just around the corner, and Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on a Newcastle target.

The Magpies have recruited very wisely since Howe arriving at the club.

The likes of Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes has taken Newcastle to a different level in the last 12 months.

Bringing in Dan Ashworth from Brighton has also signalled that Newcastle want to sign players for the present and the future.

They’ve already acted to bring in teenage Australian international Garang Kuol, who will join up with the side in January.

Romano now believes that Newcastle are closely watching Real Valladolid full-back Ivan Fresneda.

The 18-year-old defender has broken into the La Liga side’s first-team this season.

The young sensation’s performances have impressed enough to attract the interest of a number of top clubs across Europe.

Newcastle now watching Fresneda

Romano provided an update on Twitter yesterday, saying: “Many European clubs are monitoring Valladolid talented RB Iván Fresneda.

“Not just Juventus still waiting to move for new fullback, also Newcastle and more Premier League clubs have his name in the list.

“Borussia Dortmund have also joined the race for Fresneda.”

Newcastle could be competing against Arsenal for Fresneda’s signing soon.

It shows the level the Magpies are at right now that they’re among the biggest clubs in football competing for player’s signatures.

The Athletic believe that Howe wants to add a young right-back to the squad as cover for Kieran Trippier.

West Ham full-back Harrison Ashby has also been considered to fill that role.

Newcastle are watching Fresneda given Howe hasn’t been convinced by Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

There aren’t many better right-backs out there for Fresneda to shadow than Trippier.

The England international is brilliant defensively and going forward, can deliver a wicked set piece and is a natural leader.

Fresneda’s first-team involvement in Spain shows he’s also ready to step up in case Trippier picks up an injury.
