John Terry shares what he's always telling Aston Villa's defenders in private chats
John Terry has revealed on the official England podcast that he constantly stresses the importance of putting your body on the line to Aston Villa’s defenders.
Terry works as a coach at Villa, and has performed impressive work with their back-line over the past season.
Dean Smith’s side looked ropey in defence in the early part of their first campaign back in the Premier League.
However, after the first lockdown, Villa have been much tougher to break down.
The addition of the likes of Emiliano Martinez and Matty Cash has made Villa a much stronger defensive unit.
And Terry says that he is always telling Villa’s backline to ensure that they give their all for the cause.
“When you see [a player] giving everything, supporters live for that,” Terry said.
“Being a defender – midfielders and strikers are different they live for goals and passes and creating opportunities – but I loved taking one full in the face or the chest and taking it square.
“It’s something I talk to the defenders at Villa about, being very honest but knowing your role as well. That’s the responsibility of a defender and a big part of my game.”
Kicking on again
Villa will now be hoping to push on again next campaign, after really establishing themselves as a Premier League club now.
Dean Smith’s side were not at all threatened by relegation last term, and have already made encouraging moves in the transfer market, with Emiliano Buendia joining up.
