John Terry backs Liverpool and Van Dijk to challenge Chelsea

Former Chelsea and England defender, John Terry, has said that he doesn’t see how anyone is getting past a Liverpool defence with Virgil van Dijk playing as he is now.

Van Dijk was once again in imperious form as the Reds hammered Arsenal at the weekend to keep their hopes of winning a second Premier League title firmly alive. It’s set to be a tight race to the top, with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City all looking in fine nick.

But Liverpool, with Van Dijk now back fit and well after missing last season through injury, do look exceptional in defence. They have conceded 11 goals, which is more than Chelsea and City, but three of those came at West Ham in one game last week.

And speaking to BEIN Sports, Terry believes Liverpool are looking stronger than ever with Van Dijk at the heart of things.

“Out of the two, I have to say Liverpool look a threat. I just think they have got so many goals going forward,” Terry said when asked who could challenge Chelsea out of Liverpool and City.

“Defensively I look at Van Dijk and think, I am not sure who gets past him. We all have an off day, which he will, but at the same time they look very solid.”

Van Dijk’s injury last season ended the Reds’ hopes of retaining their title. But now back and playing well, the Dutchman’s impact is even more apparent.

TBR’s View: Liverpool in fine form but title will be won in big games

Of course, winning a title means beating most teams over the course of a season. But this year the top three look like they’re leaps ahead of anyone else. Ultimately, it’s looking more and more like things will be decided in games between the trio.

Liverpool have as good a chance as anyone of winning everything. However, Salah and Mane are going to be missing in January, and that could be crucial to this title race.

Whether FSG back Klopp with some new players or the Reds make use of what they have already remains to be seen. But rest assured, something like Salah and Mane being missing could be the difference.
