John Stones should act as a warning to Everton star Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford had an eventful game against Spain in England’s last fixture. He got plenty of stick for some of his errors in the game, but Everton fans had his back. The Goodison faithful preferred to point out the extra parts of his game. Pickford’s distribution was sensational on the night, playing a key role in two of England’s goals.

Everton fans stood by him, and rightly so. However, the former Sunderland player must make sure he checks his bad habits, as the fans can swiftly turn.

Having great distribution is one thing, but trying to take on a striker and nearly conceding, will not be forgiven.

Everton fans once stood by another enigmatic player when he got stick from England fans. John Stones was often praised for his ability on the ball, not just when defending. Calm and composed under pressure, the extra dimension to his game made him occasionally prone to error.

Everton fans did, however, eventually lose patience. The mistakes came more often and appeared more costly. When he was sold to Manchester City for £47.5 million, plenty of Evertonian’s were happy to see him leave.

The fans at Goodison will no doubt want Pickford to continue pushing the envelope. However, if he starts costing the team points with regrettable and avoidable errors, the patience will wear thin.
