John McGinn reportedly set to miss EFL Cup quarter-final against Liverpool

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn is set to miss tonight’s EFL Cup quarter final against Liverpool with a thigh injury.

According to the Daily Mail, McGinn has struggled with the problem since the 2-0 victory over Newcastle last month and it’s thought that he picked up the injury on Scotland duty.

The report also says that he has been having painkilling injections to get through matches and has been unable to take a full part in training until last week.

And that means that the match against the champions of Europe – who will be fielding a weakened team due to their Club World Cup commitments – represents a chance to give him a rest ahead of the Christmas period.

TBR’s View – Injury battle explains McGinn’s recent slump

McGinn hasn’t been the same player who burst into the Premier League with boundless energy of late.

He shone on international duty but was unable to take that confidence back to Villa and this niggling injury battle explains why.

Villa will hope that midweek rest will allow McGinn continue his recovery as they embark upon a hectic Christmas period, looking to get a foothold in the relegation battle.

Jack Grealish needs McGinn’s support in terms of creative threat from midfield and Villa don’t have anyone else who offers quite the same energy as the Scot.
