Scotland finally had something to cheer about yesterday as they ended a run of four straight qualifying defeats against minnows San Marino.
Steve Clarke’s side won 6-0 at Hampden Park with Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn the star of the show in a rain-soaked Glasgow.
The midfielder scored a first-half hat-trick, the first of his professional career, to carry on his excellent form at the start of this season.

It was a special achievement for the 24-year-old, who went on to praise the coaching staff at Aston Villa after the game, as reported by The Scottish Sun, for helping him become a more potent goal-threat
“Credit to the staff at Aston Villa right now, I am working tirelessly on making runs into the box and making myself more useful up the park.
“The manager and the coaching staff at Villa, including (assistant head coaches) Richard O’Kelly and John Terry, have helped me in trying to be more of a goal threat.
“They always do certain things individually, watch a lot of clips and analyse the game.
“I was very raw before and maybe still am a little bit, but I’m trying to cut that out and become better all the time. There’s no better place to do that than Aston Villa.”
TBR’s View
Whilst McGinn has always been known for his assist ability his goalscoring antics are often less impressive.
Last season, he scored seven goals for club and country but the hard work on the Aston Villa training ground is now clearly paying off.
His hat-trick last night took his tally for the season to seven again, but it is still only mid-October.
If McGinn can go on to score 15-odd goals this season it will highlight yet again what a shrewd addition he was to the Aston Villa fold last summer. It will also justify why the club handed him a new deal this summer.
