John McGinn is justifying his reported £50 million summer price-tag

This summer saw Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn being linked with a move to Manchester United. As reported by The Sun, United’s legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson was pushing for his former club to bring in the Scotland international.

The Sun, however, also claimed that Aston Villa would want £50 million for the privilege and no deal ever came about.

To many an outside observer, it all seemed absurd. McGinn had never played in the Premier League and was a bargain buy for Aston Villa from Hibernian last summer.

However, among Aston Villa fans, the feeling was different. They felt that £50 million was simply not enough for the 24-year-old.

After the opening three games of the Premier League season, neutrals might now understand why.

McGinn has been outstanding in Aston Villa’s first three games of the campaign, especially in the 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park on Friday night.

Up against the far more expensive trio of Andre Gomes, Gylfi Sigurdsson, and Morgan Schneiderlin, it was McGinn who looked like the most expensive midfield option on show.

He currently has one assist and one goal from the opening three games of the season but those figures are sure to climb as the campaign rolls on.

It is clear why Aston Villa got McGinn tied down to a new long-term contract this summer. If he carries on the way he has been so far this season, that £50 million price-tag will sound about right.
