Former Celtic and Scotland defender Stephen Crainey believes John McGinn’s form at Aston Villa has proven a point about Scottish football and the quality available to English clubs.
Arsenal are currently pursuing Celtic defender Kieran Tierney. As reported by the Scottish Sun, Arsenal have now met Celtic’s £25 million price-tag for the player.

Whilst discussing the potential of a Tierney-to-Arsenal deal, Crainey told the Scottish Sun that he feels McGinn’s excellent season at Villa Park has proved a point.
“John has gone to Aston Villa and done really well.
“Guys like that have shown there are quality players to be found in Scotland again.
“There are plenty of good players in Scotland and there is no doubt English teams will be keeping an eye on them.”
As reported by The Times, Aston Villa spent £2.75 million to bring McGinn to the Championship from Hibernian.
McGinn went on to prove himself as one of the bargains of the season. The Scotland international was voted the Player’s Player of the Year as Aston Villa won promotion to the Premier League.
However, that form attracted interest. The Sun suggested this summer that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted McGinn at Manchester United. The report went on to suggest that Aston Villa would ask for £50 million for the player.
There is no doubt that Aston Villa fans would agree with the assessment from Crainey. Tierney will hope to have a similar impact to McGinn if he does make the move to England this summer. Aston Villa fans, meanwhile, will be pleased they managed to get McGinn before the secret was out.
