John McGinn £50m valuation highlights Celtic’s point regarding Kieran Tierney

Aston Villa may have a fight on their hands keeping hold of midfielder John McGinn this summer. The Sun is reporting that Manchester United see him as a potentially transformative addition to their midfield this summer.

The price-tag involved, however, is raising eyebrows. Aston Villa would demand £50 million for the player.

It will certainly have Celtic fans scratching their heads. The Bhoys desperately wanted McGinn last summer.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic had three bids rejected for the player in 2018. A £2 million offer was the final one tabled by Celtic for his services. Hibernian reportedly valued the midfielder at £4 million if selling to a Scottish rival.

In the end, as reported by the BBC, Aston Villa paid £2.75 million for McGinn’s services.

To hear he might now be worth £50 million will undoubtedly have Celtic fans disappointed.

But it also raises another good point. Would McGinn be worth £50 million as a Celtic player?

Looking at the current pursuit of Kieran Tierney by Arsenal, probably not. It certainly seems that playing in the English Championship increases the value of a player far more significantly than the Scottish Premiership. Arsenal’s latest initial bid for Tierney is just £17.5 million, according to Football Scotland.

Whether that is fair or not is up for debate. But if Tierney was at Aston Villa, you can bet teams would not have a chance of getting him for less than £25 million.

With that in mind, Celtic should hold firm on their valuation for the highly-talented Scotland left-back.
