Everton put in a toothless display at Goodison Park yesterday as they lost 2-0 to newly-promoted Sheffield United. It was another worrying performance from Marco Silva’s men, as fans become increasingly unsettled at the Portuguese’s inability to produce consistency from his players.
Everton’s midfield struggled to get a stranglehold on the game whilst a former Toffee did plenty of damage on the opposing side.
John Lundstram put in an excellent display as the Blades claimed all three points.
The 25-year-old was a dynamo in the Sheffield United midfield, leaving Everton’s pairing of Fabian Delph and, in particular, Morgan Schneiderlin, looking sheepish.
Lundstram got his just rewards with a brilliant assist for Lys Mousset in the second-half.
Everton fans will undoubtedly be aware of the Blades midfielder’s history.
The local lad was an England youth international who spent time on loan at six different clubs but never truly made a breakthrough into the first-team at Goodison Park.
“You get a knockback at the time. I was gutted. It was always my aim to get back up the leagues.
“To be honest, I was looking for Everton first (when the fixtures were announced). I can’t wait to go back there and hopefully prove people wrong.”
In 2015, he was released by the then Roberto Martinez managed Everton. He went on to join Oxford United and from there he gained a reputation as one of the Football League’s top midfielders, joining Sheffield United in 2017.
In conversation this week with the Premier League online, Lundstram admitted he wanted to prove some people wrong by putting on a good showing at Goodison Park.
He can rest assured that he managed to do just that. Everton fans would have certainly loved to have him on their team yesterday.
