Sheffield United picked up their first win since returning to the Premier League at the weekend by claiming a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.
The goalscorer in the game would have certainly caught the attention of Everton fans. John Lundstram came through the youth ranks at Finch Farm.
The local lad was an England youth international who spent time on loan at six different clubs but never truly made a breakthrough into the first-team at Goodison Park.
In 2015, he left the club on a free transfer and joined Oxford United. From there he gained a reputation as one of the Football League’s top midfielders and joined the Blades in 2017. Now he is finally getting his chance in the Premier League and told The Sheffield Star this week of his ‘tough road’ back after leaving his boyhood club.
“Stepping away from Everton and working my way back up. It’s been a long, tough road but moments like this make you look back and think that everything was worth it.”
Lundstram was highly-rated at Everton but never quite made the grade for Roberto Martinez’s men.
The club were looking to push up the Premier League table at the time and it was clearly believed that Lundstram had no place in that future.
The 25-year-old has done brilliantly to work his way back to the top-flight but he may fall into the category of a player who needed to leave the comfort of Everton to make it on his own.
He will surely receive a warm reception when Sheffield United visit Goodison Park in September.
