John Hartson has told Football Pass that he thinks Scotland manager Steve Clarke could be tempted with a move to Celtic after the European Championships – with the Celtic icon claiming Clarke is a Hoops supporter.

Clarke has just picked his final Scotland squad before he chooses the squad that will represent Scotland at the Euros in the summer. Scotland take on Austria, Israel and the Faroe Islands in the first three of 10 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

The ex-Chelsea assistant’s stock is high. He starred as Kilmarnock manager before getting the Scotland job and has now delivered Scotland into their first major tournament since 1998. A stunning achievement, for a side that has underachieved of late.

Celtic icon Hartson was asked by Football Pass presenter Matt Smith if he thought Clarke could be tempted with a move to Parkhead – and Hartson responded by suggesting he could, stating that Clarke is a Celtic fan.

“The Celtic job is a massive job, as Steve knows,” Hartson said. “I really like Steve Clarke, he did a great job at Kilmarnock and he got great experience under Jose Mourinho. He comes into the fray, high up the ladder for me.

“It is down to him about club or international management, which are two different things. I know he’s a Celtic fan, I don’t mind saying that. I know he’s got a big liking for Celtic. It might pull on the old heart strings when they get hold of him, possibly.”

TBR’s view – Clarke would be a stunning appointment for Celtic

There aren’t many better managers suited to the Celtic job. What the Hoops require is a manager with good pedigree, one that can help them on the training ground, is tactically astute but could also help them in the transfer market.

Clarke proved his pedigree at Killie and now at Scotland, while he is also renowned for being a good man manager. Tactically, he has proved crucial in helping Scotland fight the right formation. His connections down south would help transfers.

He is the ideal candidate, and if Celtic can tempt him into swapping Scotland for the Hoops after the Euros – then he is worth waiting for.
