John Hartson has given his verdict on the future of Welsh prospect Daniel James, after his hugely impressive season at Swansea.
As per the Sunday People, 19/05, page 53, Hartson has given the benefit of his experience with the bright young things of Welsh football, and shed some light on why he isn’t already a Leeds United player.
The pundit, who works for BBC and BT Sport, said: “He was very close to going to Leeds on the final day of the January transfer window for £10m. But I believe Swansea pulled the plug on the deal at the last minute because they thought Leeds were stealing him at that price.
“The transfer was almost over the line. I believe his parents were at Elland Road with the lad but Seandea than told Leeds the deal was off. It’s unfair to start comparing him to Gareth Bale – just like it was unfair when Gareth was immediately compared to Ryan Giggs.”

James is the next cab off the rank in terms of Welsh football – although perhaps the likes of David Brooks and Harry Wilson being around may ease the burden.
But if James makes that big move – and the Premier League may beckon now that Leeds haven’t been able to get there themselves – then he will find the pressure ramping up a notch.
Leeds would likely have got themselves a bargain really at £10m, and that could have been the difference between another season in the Championship and lining up in the top flight next campaign.
