John Hartson claims Celtic fans would like to see Victor Wanyama return

John Hartson has delivering a glowing verdict on Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama, who Celtic were reportedly interested in re-signing in the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old is currently on the fringes at Spurs and has made just two senior appearances this season across all competitions, where he has struggled to make an impression.

But he was a real hit when he first joined Spurs in 2016 and the defensive midfielder also impressed during a two-year spell earlier in his career with Celtic.

According to the Daily Record at the beginning of September, Spurs were considering loaning out the Kenya international and there was interest from Club Brugge.

The report also detailed that Celtic manager Neil Lennon put him top of his wanted list.

Lennon has since confirmed (Scottish Sun) that there was interest in Wanyama and teased potentially looking at him in the upcoming January transfer window.

Hartson has spoken highly about ex-Celtic midfielder Wanyama and explained reasons why he could return, but would be concerned about the competition for places.

“I think the crowd would like to see him go back. He’s a quality player and Celtic could do with quality players,” Wanyama told FootballFanCast.

“He’s a very good midfielder but Celtic have got good midfield players. They’ve got a collection at their disposal and they can only play four. Does it upset the balance if you bring in Wanyama all of a sudden?

“There’s a few clubs who will be interested in Wanyama. He’s big, he’s solid, he’s reliable, he’s a physical presence in both boxes. He’s a very, very good player and that’s why he’s playing for one of the top four clubs.”

TBR’s View:

With Celtic captain Scott Brown perhaps reaching the latter stages of his career, it would make sense to bring in some more reinforcements to the centre of the park.

There is plenty of quality with the likes of Brown, Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham in midfield, but re-signing Wanyama would be another boost to the squad.

Wanyama could do with a move considering his Spurs career has gone stale and injury problems have played a big factor in that.

He now looks ready to play regularly again and a fresh move to kickstart his career makes sense.
