John Barnes has told BeIN Sports that he can see Rafa Benitez leaving Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang to replace Marco Silva at Everton, despite previously managing Liverpool during his career.
Silva continues to come under increasing pressure after suffering another defeat on Sunday evening to Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City. An injury-time goal from Kelechi Iheanacho saw Leicester win, after VAR confirmed he was onside.
Everton sit in 17th place, just two points in front of 18th-placed Southampton. They have won just one of their last five league games, and now face a very difficult run of games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.
Liverpool legend Barnes was asked if he could see ex-Liverpool gaffer Benitez, 59, leaving Dalian Yifang to replace Silva, and the former England international reckons Benitez would put Merseyside rivalries aside to take over at Goodison Park.
“I could see Benitez going to Everton,” Barnes said. “Benitez is coming from China, Mauricio Pochettino is in a different position to Benitez. I think Benitez would take Everton, I think he would. Everton need someone to stabilise the club.”
TBR’s view – Is Benitez the man Everton should look to?
Everton need a manager, as Barnes says, that can keep them in the Premier League. Sitting in a perilously dangerous position close to relegation, The Toffees need a man who can organise their defence.
He guided Newcastle to safety in two seasons following the Toon’s promotion to the club. Benitez would be an excellent appointment, if indeed Everton can convince him to put his Liverpool loyalties aside and move to Goodison.
