John Aldridge wants Liverpool to pick Thiago Alcantara against Manchester United

Former Liverpool hero John Aldridge has urged Jurgen Klopp to unleash Thiago Alcantara in Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, during an interview with the Liverpool Echo.

The Spaniard hasn’t enjoyed a great start to life at Anfield after missing several games with a troublesome injury problem.

Thiago is now fully fit, however, and will be chomping at the bit to show Liverpool supporters what he is capable of.

The reigning champions watched United go top of the Premier League last night as they won 1-0 away at Burnley.

Liverpool will know that a victory over the Red Devils at the weekend will see them hit the summit once again.

Aldridge believes Klopp has some big calls to make – but thinks Thiago should be starting.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “The final ball has not been up to our standard in the last few games and that’s what’s been letting us down a bit.

“From midfield, there is no better player to see that pass than Thiago. That’s his forte.

“Whoever the manager plays in there – we don’t know as he’s got a lot of options – but at the moment he is the one that’ll see that killer pass more than anyone.”

Spending months on the sidelines was not in the script for the Spaniard when he checked in at Anfield for £20 million.

The £192,000-a-week star helped Bayern Munich to eleven straight wins in the Champions League last season, lifting the trophy by beating PSG in the final.

Thiago has been restricted to just five appearances at Liverpool and the challenge now is to stay fit.

If he does, Liverpool could have a player on their hands who will seem like a new signing for the second half of the campaign.

With Fabinho and Jordan Henderson acting as makeshift defenders recently, someone needs to step up in midfield.

That someone needs to be Thiago.
