John Achterberg lauds Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian

Liverpool goalkeeper coach John Achterberg has insisted to the Liverpool Echo that the Reds can have no complaints with what Adrian has done since he arrived at Anfield in the summer.

The Spaniard was a surprise addition to Jurgen Klopp’s ranks. He began the summer without a club, and the Liverpool Echo reports that he was training with a Spanish semi-professional side after leaving West Ham on a free transfer.

But he was brought in to provide cover for Alisson Becker in early August. And within four days, he had made his debut for the Reds as Alisson sustained an injury during the first-half of their clash with Norwich City.

Since then, Adrian has helped Liverpool to a flawless start in the Premier League. And he also saved the decisive penalty in the Super Cup win over Chelsea.

And Achterberg insisted that Liverpool are delighted with what they have seen from the 32-year-old since his arrival at Melwood.

“He had to come in from West Ham and he had to settle quickly,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Everything he has done so far has been really good, we have not been able to complain much at all. It’s a different style of play, with West Ham he had to kick the ball long 90 per cent of the time, but we ask him to be calm on the ball and play out from the back.

“To be fair, he has picked it up really quickly. He has adapted fast, even though he had a lot of experience playing in the Premier League.”

Considering that he did arrive so close to the start of the season and that he almost immediately made his debut, there can be no doubt that Adrian has been a shrewd signing.

There have been a couple of errors. But Adrian has undoubtedly silenced those who were left stunned when it became clear he was Merseyside-bound during the summer.
