Tottenham Hotspur’s new technical director Johan Lange was reportedly a key figure in the deal to sign Timo Werner on loan.

Timo Werner’s move to Tottenham was officially announced on Tuesday evening as the German became Ange Postecoglou’s first January signing.

The 27-year-old has joined Spurs on an initial six-month loan deal, with Fabrizio Romano claiming there is an option to buy Werner for around £14 million this summer.

Postecoglou was reportedly keen on bringing Werner to North London, having convinced the striker to make a return to the Premier League.

And it seems that Tottenham’s technical director Johan Lange was also heavily involved in the deal.

Lange urged Tottenham to sign Werner

The Athletic reports that Lange was aware of Tottenham’s need for a new pacey forward and worked to set up a deal heading into the window.

It’s noted that the former Aston Villa man was ‘one of the key figures’ in the Werner signing, alongside Postecoglou.

Indeed, Werner is admired by the Spurs boss, who is confident that he will thrive in his system.

Lange joined Tottenham from Villa back in October and had plenty of time to prepare ahead of a crucial January window.

It’s no secret that Spurs have been unfortunate when it comes to injuries this season.

The former Villa chief has already secured a new attacker for Postecoglou at a vital time, with Heung-Min Son away at the Asian Cup.

Spurs are yet to snap up that much-needed centre-back signing though and Bayern Munich are attempting to hijack their move for Radu Dragusin.

Nevertheless, bringing in Werner could prove to be an astute move from Spurs, especially if Postecoglou is able to get the best out of the forward.

The German struggled at Chelsea between 2020 and 2022 before being sold back to Leipzig for £25 million.

He’s managed just two goals in 14 appearances in all competitions this season.
