Joey Barton says he would take Everton job

Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton has been quoted by Fleetwood Today as saying that he would take the Everton job in the future if it was offered to him, claiming it would be somewhere he would hold close to his heart.

Barton, 37, has been in charge of League One side Fleetwood since entering the world of management in the summer of 2018. He has now managed 75 games as Fleetwood boss, winning 29 times but losing on 28 occasions.

His side have improved this season, though, as they sit in seventh place in the third tier and are pushing for a top-six slot – having won nine of their 16 league games. A one-time England cap, Barton is from Merseyside.

Barton was on the books at both Everton and Liverpool during his youth academy days, before joining Manchester City in 1997 and remaining at the club until 2007. Asked about the Everton job, Barton says he would love to manage the Toffees.

“It’s a job that in the future, as an Evertonian, you would like to take,” Barton said. “I look at some of the people who have had the job, and I think that if I keep progressing and moving forward, it’s somewhere you’d hold dear to your heart. Although I never played there, I have great memories of watching as a kid.”

TBR’s view – Should Everton consider a risk and appoint Barton?

Though Barton is showing plenty of potential at Fleetwood, especially this season, it is far too soon to entrust him with a Premier League role. But Barton is certainly showing enough promise to head in that direction.

Barton needs a promotion and a move to a big Championship club where he can also impress. Then the Premier League has a chance, but he must bide his time and pick the right jobs. Everton, right now, is a step too far.

Marco Silva’s position remains in doubt, and it is believed that David Moyes and Eddie Howe are the two likeliest solutions.
