Yesterday, Rangers announced the signing of midfielder Joey Barton, who will join the club on a two-year deal after turning down a new contract offer from Burnley. The 33-year-old with join the Glasgow outfit on the 1st July when his current deal at Turf Moor comes to an end.

After impressing in the English second flight this term, Barton has already stated his ambition to establish himself as the best midfielder in Scotland, according to quotes published by The Telegraph.

He proved to be instrumental during the Clarets’ recent Championship winning campaign, with his excellent displays seeing him included in the PFA team of the year and the Football League team of the year. Meanwhile he was named as club’s Player of the Season.

Barton made 38 appearances in total, scoring three goals and providing a further two assists. Tenacious as ever in the centre of the park, he also averaged 2.9 tackles and 2.2 tackles per game. Perhaps most surprisingly, he didn’t pick up a single suspension during this time – although he did earn himself ten yellow cards across all competitions.

This tenacity makes him the perfect signing for Rangers as they make their return to the Scottish top flight. The fiery Scouser will surely be relishing the prospect of an Old Firm league double header, during which he will match up against the equally as passionate Scott Brown – Celtic’s captain – a notion Rangers fans were quick to pick up on.
