Joey Barton comments on Newcastle job, says it would be ‘tough to refuse’

Joey Barton has told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Evening Chronicle, that he would find it “tough” to refuse a move to former side Newcastle United this summer as the club’s new manager.

Barton, 36, has been mentioned as a possible successor to Rafa Benitez, after the Spaniard left the club earlier this week. Owner Mike Ashley and Benitez failed to come to an agreement, to fans dismay.

A whole host of managers have been linked with the job, most recently Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, Burnley gaffer Sean Dyche and Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta all said to be in the frame.

Currently in charge of League One side Fleetwood Town, Barton was asked to comment on the Newcastle job and although he stated that he is happy learning his trade at Fleetwood, it would be tough to refuse the Toon.

“I love everything I am doing at Fleetwood, there is a great group of players, great group of people I am working with. I am happy with where I am,” Barton said.

“If Newcastle ever come calling, for any manager by the way, it is tough (to refuse). But I am happy where I am. I do feel I need a period of time to really learn my trade. We cross those bridges when we come to them.”

TBR’s view – Barton too soon for Newcastle

Barton joined Fleetwood last year and has slightly improved the third-tier club, taking them to an eleventh-placed finish – whereas in 17-18 it was 14th. But the ex-Newcastle midfielder continues to remain in the news.

Accusations of Barton assaulting Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel and a reported fight in Newquay see Barton remain a regular feature in the tabloids. Twin that with his inexperience, and Barton is not the man for Newcastle.

Perhaps, in years to come, Barton could be the man that is worthy of taking over at St. James’ Park. But right now, it is too soon in his managerial career for Newcastle to consider the risk.
