In this most dramatic of World Cups where players such as Neymar, Robben & Muller have given 5 star performances, few this World Cup can claim to have put in a bigger and braver performance then Joel Campbell.
Campbell, who scored one and creating another, almost single hardly dragged Costa Rica to victory over Croatia. The 21 year olds pace & power caused the Croatian defence problems the whole game.
One man who would have been watching with a particular interest is Aresne Wenger. Arsenal has been linked with big money moves for Karim Benzema and Swansea hit man Wilford Bony. Much to many Arsenal fans frustration Wenger may well decide he has enough firepower with the inclusion of Campbell. Much will depend on how Campbell performs in the rest of the tournament.
Campbell has spent loans spells at Lorient & Real Betis since joining Arsenal in 2011. He also spent last season on loan to Greek side Olympiacos where he made 32 appearances with surprisingly just 8 goals to his name. Campbell was of course part of the team that famously beat Manchester United 2-0 back in February.
Wenger will be looking to see if Campbell can hold his own against Italy this Friday. The 21 year old striker would certainly add something different to Arsenals attack, he can also play as a winger and an injection of pace will certain not go amiss especially while Theo Walcott is injury. He should also be noted for his good teamwork and stamina; we will know far more about him after Costa Rica’s game with Italy on Friday as whether he is ready to play in the Arsenal first team.
Wenger has already announced Campbell will be returning to Arsenal for pre season, though he didn’t rule out Campbell being loaned out again.
Costa Rica legend Paulo Wanchope has said Campbell should return to Arsenal
“Joel wants to go back to Arsenal; I told him the only way to do that is by performing on the pitch.”
Wanchope also added “I’m sure Arsene Wenger will have a look at him”
He went on to say he thought Campbell would play even better against Italy & England.
All eyes will be on Campbell against Italy to see if he can force his way into Aresne Wenger’s thinking for next season.
