Joe Willock has completed a permanent £25million move to Newcastle from Arsenal, signing a six-year contract on Tyneside. The midfielder joins The Toon after starring on loan at Newcastle last season. Willock has told the club’s website why he had to join Newcastle from Arsenal.

Willock, 21, clocked up 78 senior appearances for Arsenal after breaking through the ranks and into the senior side. He managed just seven Premier League outings during the first half of the 2020-21 season, though, and that convinced him to go on loan to Newcastle. He joined on loan in January.

What has Willock said about leaving Arsenal for Newcastle?

Not many predicted just how good he would be. Clocking up 14 Premier League appearances for Steve Bruce’s side, England Under-21 ace Willock scored a hugely impressive eight goals. It convinced Newcastle to buy him, spending £25million to get him. Willock explains why he has to move.

“I’m buzzing to be here,” Willock said. “I loved my time here and I’m really happy to be back. Leaving Arsenal is obviously a big step, and I’d like to thank everyone involved with the club for all their support over the years, but this is the right move to the right club at the right time for me.”

Willock will retain the number 28 shirt which he wore during his loan spell. However, the midfielder will not be available for Sunday’s opening Premier League clash against West Ham as he was registered too late. He will be available to face Aston Villa at Villa Park next Saturday.
