Arsenal fans have endured a frustrating transfer window so far this summer. So far, the Gunners have only been able to secure the signing of Brazilian teenager Gabriel Martinelli, who is entirely untested in European football. What’s more, the lack of arrivals has been exacerbated by the loss of key players on free transfers.
The likes of Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck were able to depart the Emirates Stadium this summer for free. The exit of Ramsey is particularly damaging as the Welshman was a vital part of the club’s midfield.
Unai Emery must now find a way to reinforce his midfield contingent. Due to the Gunners’ tight budget, his ability to achieve this via the market is limited. Therefore, the Spanish coach should be prepared to invest his faith in Joe Willock.
The 19-year-old was officially promoted to the first team squad this summer, taking the No. 28 shirt. For the last two seasons he has been on the fringes of the team, making 17 appearances. Last season he showed flashes of real quality, and also bagged his first senior goals.
Willock has continued to impress this summer. The England under-20 international shone in Arsenal’s recent victory over Bayern Munich in a pre-season friendly.
Given the holes in Emery’s squad, it could be that Willock will take on additional responsibility this season. He certainly looks ready to take on that challenge. By the end of the campaign, Willock may well have established himself as a key figure in the Gunners’ squad. Arsenal fans should be excited to see if the academy graduate can rise to this task.
