Joe Hart posts one-word reaction after seeing Carter-Vickers' amazing display for USA last night
The defender was brought into the USA team for their crucial final group stage game against Iran, where it was basically winner takes all.
He helped his side get a clean sheet as they won 1-0 to book their place in the next round and set up a clash with the Netherlands on Saturday.
He will expect to keep his place in the team for that game against Louis van Gaal’s side, who are also unbeaten at the tournament but have not quite sparked into life.
Hart reacts to Carter-Vickers display
After the game, the former Tottenham man took to Instagram to celebrate the victory on his debut on the biggest stage of all.
There were plenty of messages of congratulations in the replies, including from Michel Vorm, who of course used to play for Saturday’s opponents at international level.
Hart also replied with a single word and an emoji, making it clear he was pleased for his club teammate on a job well done.
Goal USA handed him a huge write-up after the game, saying: “The big surprise on the team sheet more than justified his selection.
“Carter-Vickers replaced Zimmerman, a stalwart who had started both of the World Cup games so far. Benching Zimmerman was a big call by Berhalter, especially given the fact that Carter-Vickers and Tim Ream had never played together.
“Consider it a stroke of genius. Likely brought in due to his ability to contain Iran’s counters, Carter-Vickers settled into the game nicely. The centre back lost a few aerial duals early, but grew as the game went on, limiting Iran even as the trailing team pushed forward.
“Credit must also go to Ream, who was faultless yet again and may just be the USMNT’s most impressive player at this tournament.
“What a game it was for the two centre backs, both of whom seemed like they wouldn’t even be in this squad a month or two ago.”
