Joe Hart brands Tottenham player 'teachers pet' after Nuno Espirito Santo arrival
Matt Doherty was a crucial part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves side before his move to Tottenham Hotspur. Famed for his back three, Doherty was up and down the right flank – scoring plenty of goals. Now, Nuno has arrived at Tottenham, and Joe Hart has given Doherty a new nickname on Instagram.
Doherty, 29, played 302 times for Wolves. Joining the club for just £75,000 form Irish side Bohemians, the 20-time Ireland international joined Tottenham last summer for around £15million. Santo has signed a two-year deal at Tottenham, and now he is set to reunite with Doherty.
It might just rejuvenate Doherty. The right-back has struggled since joining Tottenham, with Jose Mourinho chopping and changing between Doherty and Serge Aurier. Ahead of pre-season on Monday, Hart posted a video online of both in the gym – labelling Doherty a “teachers pet”.
Can Doherty reignite form under Nuno at Tottenham – following Hart Instagram?
Without a doubt – but it could hinge on whether Nuno uses the formation that got the best out of Doherty at Wolves. If he is to play a back three, Tottenham will certainly need to bring in centre-backs. Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez all struggled during 2020-21.
Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga are also options – but Spurs lack a left-sided centre-back following the exit of Jan Vertonghen. Of course, Ben Davies can be used as a left-sided centre-back. Doherty on the right might see him rediscover his best form – especially under the guidance of Nuno.
