Joe Gomez has sent an emotional message to departing Liverpool teammate Georginio Wijnaldum on Instagram.
Wijnaldum, 30, is out of contract at Anfield at the end of June with his departure already announced.
The Dutch midfielder claimed (official website) he’ll be a Liverpool fan “for life” after he played what looks like his last appearance for the Reds in the weekend’s Premier League final day win over Crystal Palace, which incidentally secured Champions League qualification for next season.
He leaves Merseyside after five years with a hero status secured.
The all-action central midfielder was an integral part in recent years for a dominant Jurgen Klopp side that won both the Premier League and Champions League.
24-year-old defender Gomez, who along with Wijnaldum has been key in the Liverpool success, has posted a heartfelt message to his teammate on social media.
Gomez admitted Wijnaldum is someone he looks up to, as well as describing him as a “brother”.
TBR’s View:
If you think of the style that has defined Klopp’s success at Liverpool so far, Wijnaldum is one of the first names that springs to mind.
The energetic midfielder on his day is unplayable for opponents with his tireless box-to-box running, and he’s shown in patches during his final season at Anfield he’s still got star quality despite some tough moments for the team collectively.
Aged 30, there is no doubt he can still achieve much more elsewhere.
