Joe Gomez says Liverpool have an 'unbelievable' 22-year-old in their ranks
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has waxed lyrical about Reds teammate Ibrahima Konate.
The Liverpool centre-back duo kept a clean sheet on Tuesday night as the Reds ran out 3-0 winners at Norwich in the League Cup.
Gomez, who captained the Anfield outfit on the night, started next to Konate as they kept their fifth clean sheet of the season in all competitions.
In contrast to last season, Jurgen Klopp now has plenty to choose from at centre-back.
Gomez, along with Virgil van Dijk, was out of action for much of 2020-21.
Both are now fit, as is Joel Matip, while Konate joined Liverpool in the summer.
As well as hailing the “unbelievable” 22-year-old, Gomez says all of Liverpool’s centre-backs push each other to the highest standards every day.
“Ibou is a top guy and an unbelievable player,” the Liverpool Echo quotes Gomez as saying.
“Look at his attributes, you can see how good he is.
“When I was younger I had Virg, but Ibou is already experienced, he’s already a top player, he’s played in the Champions League.
“It’s just enjoyable playing alongside him, we both relish being young centre-backs trying to prove ourselves.
“We strive to push each other every day. It’s a healthy environment. We’re all really close.”
Liverpool are next in action on Saturday, when they head to Premier League newcomers Brentford in a 5:30pm kickoff.
