A jaded Liverpool suffered Champions League defeat last night. The Reds went down 1-0 at the Stadio San Paolo as Napoli scored a deserved last minute winner. The Partenopei were good value for their win and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be disappointed with the display from his side.
However, whilst many struggled, one man enhanced his reputation even further.
Joe Gomez was in sublime form at the back for Liverpool. The 21-year-old, along with his centre-back partner Virgil van Dijk, was the reason why Liverpool did not end up losing this game by a more convincing goal tally.
It was, perhaps, his finest performance in a Liverpool shirt and he, personally, did not deserve to be on the losing side.
It does beg the question, what do Liverpool do when Dejan Lovren returns?
The 29-year-old had an excellent summer with Croatia, helping his nation to the World Cup final. However, he has returned from Russia nursing an injury and is currently out of the first-team picture. The £20 million 2014 recruit from Southampton has struggled to win over Liverpool fans since his arrival at Anfield. However, last season was his best at the club and the World Cup enhanced his reputation.
But looking at the way Gomez performed last night, and with Van Dijk undroppable, it could be that the England youngster has done enough to maintain his place in the Liverpool XI.
It is certainly a welcome headache for Klopp and Liverpool to have.
