Joe Gomez put in a coming-of-age display last night for England and Jurgen Klopp was surely impressed.
In the absence of John Stones, Gomez was thrown into the deep end and told to keep a talented Spain attack quiet.
But his performance, alongside Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, was composed and assured.
Despite an early wobble where he nearly cost his side a goal, Gomez recovered to turn in a fantastic display.
And this means his stock has risen even further as he continues to go from strength to strength.
It is surely bad news for his defensive rivals Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.
Virgil Van Dijk is the main man at the heart of the Liverpool defence, although Klopp seems undecided on his partner.

Gomez has been paired with Van Dijk for most of the season. But last week against Manchester City, Lovren was recalled with Gomez moving to right-back.
But given how well Gomez coped against one of the strongest attacks in world football, he has surely nailed his future spot.
Looking forward, the 21-year-old must be Van Dijk’s long-term partner.
Despite his young age, he has the full package. He is quick, strong and comfortable on the ball, making him a well-rounded defender.
With each game, Gomez learns and improves and with each top performance, Lovren surely falls further down the pecking order.
