Report: 'Outstanding' Liverpool player now almost certain to sign new Anfield deal, amid reports of PL interest

Liverpool defender, Joe Gomez, is now expected to sign a new contract with the Reds, despite long-standing interest from Aston Villa.

The Telegraph reports today how Gomez sits high on the wishlist of Villa boss Steven Gerrard. However, it’s claimed in the report that there is now a strong sense that Gomez will sign a new deal with Liverpool.

Liverpool were said to have opened talks with Gomez a week or so ago. However, at the time there was said to be a worry from the Anfield end that talks would be difficult to conclude. Gomez has dropped down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp, but is still valued by the Liverpool boss. Indeed, Klopp has lauded Gomez as ‘outstanding‘ this season for his performances.

But the latest comment in the Telegraph seems to indicate there has been some sort of compromise reached. Gomez has been a key player for Klopp’s success at Liverpool. The former Charlton man will want regular football in a World Cup year, but will also be wary of leaving such a huge club.

Villa, meanwhile, are expected to back Gerrard this summer in the market. The former Rangers boss has been frustrated in recent weeks and is thought to be keen to add new faces.

TBR’s View: Liverpool Keeping Joe Gomez A Bonus For Klopp

Joe Gomez is a quality defender in his own right. The biggest problem he has is he’s never getting in front of Van Dijk, which leaves just one slot open next to the Dutchman.

Matip is reliable, Konate has been excellent, and Gomez has had to be patient as well as being a tad unlucky with injury at times in his Liverpool career. But, should he sign a new deal, then it’s a huge boost for Klopp.

Keeping Joe Gomez essentially means Liverpool won’t need a new defender this summer. And that in itself is a massive bonus.
