Joe Gomez feels that Liverpool’s performance was not up to scratch despite winning the Super Cup on penalties against Chelsea on Wednesday.
As per the Telegraph, Gomez admits that Liverpool were sloppy in Istanbul as they were perhaps a shade fortunate to escape with the trophy after the 2-2 draw.
He said: “There were a lot of things we could have done better on a personal note and as a team. There were a few sloppy moments and we obviously conceded two goals which could have been prevented. As a collective, we did not play the best football.
“We know we could have done better but at the end we all dug deep and tried to get the result. We were not at our best in spells but we improved.”
TBR’s View – The stats back Gomez’s assessment up; Liverpool need to improve
The report says that Liverpool allowed just 19 shots on goal in their first three matches of last season, while they have faced 40 in this season’s first three.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had an underwhelming pre-season and cannot afford to be off the pace at the start of the season if they want to push a formidable Manchester City side all the way again.
Gomez knows he and his team-mates must improve and the fatigue after 120 minutes in Istanbul won’t help their cause against Southampton tomorrow.
