According to a recent report by 90min, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been alerted to Joe Gomez’s situation at Liverpool.
Gomez is reportedly frustrated that he is not getting much game time at Liverpool. He could seek a move in the January window with Arsenal and Tottenham ready to pounce.
On Sunday, Liverpool and Tottenham came head-to-head at Anfield in the Premier League. And this fixture gave some interesting insight into the Gomez saga from both Liverpool and Tottenham’s perspectives.
Gomez snubbed again
Gomez has not been playing at centre-back this season and that is largely down to the form of Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip. But with Matip injured in the week, Liverpool fans expected Gomez to start in central defence.
Instead, Jurgen Klopp picked Dejan Lovren. Then, on Sunday, Klopp kept his faith in Lovren and snubbed Gomez once again. Is the 22-year-old now Liverpool’s fourth-choice centre-back?
Aurier horror show
Gomez was sat on the bench but Tottenham fans would have been wishing he was wearing a white shirt and playing at right-back. Serge Aurier proved once again that he can be a liability at the back.
The Ivory Coast defender, who was recently sent off against Leicester City, committed a clumsy foul on Sadio Mane in the box late on. Mo Salah scored the penalty and Tottenham lost as a result. This further highlighted Mauricio Pochettino’s need to sign a new right-back.
Gomez’s versatility could be vital
Gomez might be a centre-back by trade but he is also comfortable operating at right-back or left-back. The ex-Charlton defender could solve Tottenham’s serious right-back issue in the short-term before moving back to centre-half in the long-term.
With Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters failing to nail down the spot, Pochettino needs a new right-back. Gomez could be the ideal fit – but surely Liverpool would not sell to Spurs in January?
