Joe Gelhardt shares what has been tough behind the scenes at Leeds, after Saturday moment of magic

Joe Gelhardt produced a moment of magic to save a point for Leeds – and he spoke of how tough it has been behind the scenes, since joining in 2020.

Gelhardt, 19, was handed his first Elland Road outing on Saturday – coming off the bench as Leeds pursued an equaliser against Wolves.

It comes after coming off the bench against Fulham in the Cup during a penalty-shootout win – and then against Southampton last weekend.

Having scored 17 goals in 24 appearances for the club’s Under-23 side since joining Leeds from Wigan Athletic, just over a year ago.

He came off the bench with little under 30 minutes left to run, and had an effort tipped over the bar by Jose Sa. Then, blazing an effort from 10 yards.

But eventually, it was Gelhardt that proved the difference. His mazy run won Leeds a penalty in the 93rd minute, and Rodrigo duly scored.

Speaking after the match, Gelhardt explained how he has found it tough under Marcelo Bielsa since joining – but that it has paid dividends.

“It was a tough change at first, obviously. The physicality, the shape the lads are in, it was hard getting used to,” Gelhardt told LUTV.

“But when you get past that period, you learn so much off the gaffer. Technically, tactically, it makes you a better player.”

Gelhardt becoming a shining light as Leeds struggle in opening stages

Leeds have now just won once in nine Premier League matches and fans are growing concerned. The hint of a second-season drop is emerging.

A whole host of injuries, compiled with a lack of plan B, is beginning to frustrate fans. But amidst the darkness, Gelhardt is a shining light.

Martin Keown said Gelhardt reminds him of Lionel Messi – and the youngster is generating enormous excitement. He could be a saving grace.
