Joe Gelhardt appears to have compared Sam Greenwood to Steven Gerrard on Instagram after the Leeds United youngster featured in midfield in the under-23s’ latest fixture.

Leeds fans may have been surprised to see Greenwood not leading the line on Monday as Mark Jackson’s side took on West Brom.

In fact, Greenwood was initially left out of the starting lineup altogether. However, with Stuart McKinstry picking up a late injury, the 18-year-old was brought into the side at the last minute.

But with Bobby Kamwa playing up front, Greenwood was tasked with playing in midfield. The summer signing took the number eight role with Rodrigo starting just ahead of him.

It was a role that Greenwood had not featured in before this week. The teenager had made all of his previous appearances up front.

And yet, it looked to be an incredibly encouraging display from the youngster.

He looked extremely confident on the ball. And he showed a lot of discipline given that he does appear to have lack experience in that role.

It certainly seems that Greenwood’s display impressed at least one of his teammates.

The former Arsenal man took to Instagram to comment on the win. And amongst those to reply was Gelhardt who seemingly hinted that Greenwood’s performance evoked memories of one of the Premier League’s greatest number eights.

Here is Greenwood’s post, as well as Gelhardt’s reply…
