Joe Cole says Yves Bissouma looked lost in Tottenham draw
Joe Cole has told BT Sport (broadcast on 31/8; 21:46) that Yves Bissouma looked lost during the second-half of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with West Ham on Wednesday.
Antonio Conte’s side were somewhat fortunate to emerge from the London Stadium with a point. The Hammers equalised through Tomas Soucek. And the home side had their chances to win the game in the latter stages.
Jarrod Bowen sent the ball agonisingly across the goal-line in the final moments. And Lucas Paqueta almost found himself with a golden opportunity before a misunderstanding with Emerson.
Tottenham struggled to create too many chances after the break, despite dominating possession. And Cole was incredibly critical of their midfield after the full-time whistle.
He suggested that Tottenham were lucky to avoid defeat. And he picked out Bissouma and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as two who really struggled.
“West Ham were outstanding in the second-half. They moved the ball quicker, got it into Antonio. It was breathtaking at times,” he told BT Sport.
“Listen, Tottenham got away with one there. They were poor second-half. Nothing in the midfield, Hojbjerg looked like he was toiling, Bissouma looked lost. Spurs will be delighted to come away from here with a point.”
Yves Bissouma looked lost
It is potentially a little harsh to be too critical of Bissouma and Hojbjerg. The game marked the first time that the pair have started together. Bissouma was making his full debut in the contest.
Hojbjerg has formed a brilliant partnership with Rodrigo Bentancur. And he would have found it strange playing alongside the former Brighton man.
They will have better nights than Wednesday. And Bissouma will grow into his role at Tottenham.
But it does seem that Cole was not impressed with what he saw from the 26-year-old.
